Home School Monday Programs are $5 per child for members with one adult accompaniment, or $7 per child for non-members with one adult accompaniment. Please note that the program cost does not include parking or museum admission. To make your reservation or for more information, please call Cincinnati Museum Center at (513) 287-7021. Payment is due at time of reservation. Space is limited, so please register in advance. Meet your group leader in the Rotunda near the food court tables at the start of the program.

Uncovering Egypt

Archaeology is a science that allows us to unlock the secrets of past Egyptian civilizations. Participate in a hands-on demonstration of archaeological techniques as students explore a mock excavation site from Egypt and learn to identify a culture based on the replica artifacts discovered.

Take on the role of a geologist and follow the rock cycle by performing experiments to learn how rocks are formed. Discover the different properties of rocks and categorize them based on a set of criteria.

Get up close and personal with the creatures that make up the Earth’s largest population. Build-a-bug; see the world through the eyes of a fly; and learn some amazing facts about insect defense, including camouflage and mimicry. This program comes complete with live insects and some truly unbelievable mounted insects from across the globe.
Coming to America

The nineteenth century brought many people to Cincinnati's doorstep from all around the world. What factors might influence an immigrant to leave the only home they have ever known, and how did these groups impact our local community? Identify the "push" and "pull" factors that made the U.S. the land of opportunity, and the influence these groups had on Cincinnati's rich cultural history.
Fossils at our Feet: Ancient Creatures of the Queen City

This program will cover the tremendous wealth of fossilized fauna found in and around the Cincinnati area. We will explore the tri –state as it once was during the Ordovician time period. Look at and handle real local fossils and discus environmental changes that lead to new ways to survival or extinction.

Digging for Dinosaurs

Appropriate for ages 6 and up
Uncover fossils on a paleontological “dinosaur dig.” Discuss Cincinnati’s world-famous Ordovician fossils. Learn how fossils are formed and make a plaster cast of a fossil for the group to keep. Touchable fossils from dinosaurs such as Allosaurus, Tyrannosaurus, Stegosaurus, Raptors and many more make this program a junior paleontologist’s dream.
On the Trail with Lewis and Clark

Appropriate for ages 10 and up
Take an imaginary trip with Lewis and Clark to explore President Jefferson’s recent acquisition of the Louisiana Purchase for the U.S. government. Find out how the purchase affected our country and discover the preparations and training necessary for your journey. Why were they going, what did they pack, what did that discover along the way? You will answer these questions and more as we head for adventure.

Take a look at some of southern Ohio’s earliest inhabitants. What tools, natural resources and skills allowed them to survive? Students will perform duties of an archaeologist and investigate artifacts to help identify past cultures.
Forensics: The Science of Crime

Appropriate for ages 11 and up
Analyze human skull replicas to determine gender and ethnicity of a fictional victim. Combining clues from the skull with crime scene evidence, participants are able to identify a missing person and speculate as to the cause of death.
Mind Your Money (1-3)
December 3, 2012 10 - 11:30 a.m.
Appropriate for ages 6 to 10
Students review the value of money and are introduced to the concepts of earning, spending and saving. Students will play a board game that requires them to spend and save their allowance wisely. The choices they make will better prepare them for their own future monetary decisions.
Walking City
December 17, 2012 10 - 11:30 a.m.
Appropriate for ages 8 and up
Explore how geographic factors kept Cincinnatians confined to the downtown basin and why it remained a walking city longer than most. Use a period map, map key, advertisements and illustrations to perform a series of tasks that help you understand what life was like in 1863 Cincinnati. Miniature drawings of building facades and people combined with some little pigs help to make this life-like experience.
Dinosaur Discovery

Become a junior paleontologist and explore the size and bone structure of dinosaurs while using the tools of the trade and fossil replicas.
Transportation Transformations

Appropriate for ages 8 to 12
Learn how canals, streetcars and inclines impacted the growth of Cincinnati from the 1820s through the 1950s. Learn about a period folksong, role-play loading goods on a canal boat, “ride” one of Cincinnati’s five inclines and view historical photographs of these forms of transportation.
Your Heart, Your Blood, Your Health

What an amazing machine the heart is! Learn about how the heart is packaged, the way it works, the way it sounds, to which system it belongs and what it pumps. Get "up close and personal" with capillaries, "run" a little race, test your food pyramid knowledge and share some giant microbes.

Explore physics through toy-based science activities. Students investigate the laws of motion with emphasis on potential and kinetic energy. Through scientific inquiry students will use skills of prediction, observation, explanation and summary.

The North American fur trade brought together people from two different worlds. Exchange furs, coins and wampum for replica goods from a late 18th century trading post. Step into first person roles as the signers of the Treaty of Greenville to learn about the Battle of Fallen Timbers.

Lotions, Potions and Strange Notions

Appropriate for ages 8 and up
Learn what 19th century people once thought caused cholera then role-play what effects/symptoms this disease caused. Touch a “giant microbe” of Vibrio cholerae (Cholera) and investigate where we still have this disease today. Compare the names of illnesses used in the past with what they are called today. Explore old-fashioned home and herbal remedies then use mortars and pestles to roll herbal pills like those dispensed in 19th century apothecaries.
Forces of Nature

Hurricanes, tornadoes, volcanoes and earthquakes…Take a closer look at how these monster storms and earth shattering events form and how scientists study them. Geology Rocks

Be a geologist for the day! Learn all about rock and minerals while viewing and handling impressive specimens from Cincinnati Museum Center collections. Test your knowledge of everyday uses of minerals. Then, examine, test and classify specimens to learn their true identities. This hands-on program is sure to provide a rocking time!
